What to Expect During Recovery After a Full Circumference Body Contouring Procedure

Recovering from body contouring surgery is a gradual process that requires patience, preparation, and realistic expectations. Understanding how recovery typically progresses each week can make the experience feel far less overwhelming and help you feel more confident about the journey ahead.

Many patients find reassurance in having a clear timeline. Knowing what to expect allows you to arrange practical support, organise time away from work, and create a comfortable environment at home before surgery takes place.

    Understanding the Procedure

A 360 Lower Body Lift is a comprehensive body contouring procedure designed to remove excess skin and tissue around the entire midsection. The surgery generally targets the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks, hips, and outer thighs to create a smoother and more balanced body shape.

The procedure is often chosen by people who have undergone major weight loss and are left with loose or sagging skin that cannot be improved through exercise alone. By treating the full circumference of the lower body in a single operation, surgeons can achieve more harmonious and proportionate results.

How Long Does Recovery Usually Take?

For most patients, recovery takes between six and eight weeks, although healing times can vary depending on overall health, age, lifestyle, and how carefully post-operative advice is followed.

This period should not be treated as a race back to normality. Rest plays a vital role in proper healing and reducing the likelihood of complications. Planning ahead can make recovery significantly easier. Many patients prepare meals in advance, arrange help from family or friends, and set up a comfortable resting area before surgery.

    Recovery Timeline Week by Week

Week One: Rest and Early Healing

The first week is focused entirely on recovery and careful monitoring. Most patients remain in hospital for a few nights before returning home to continue healing.

During this stage, drainage tubes and surgical dressings are usually in place, and movement should be kept to a minimum. Sleeping in a slightly elevated position is commonly recommended to help reduce swelling and protect the incision areas.

Discomfort, tightness, and fatigue are expected during the early days, though prescribed medication generally keeps symptoms manageable. Careful attention to wound care instructions is essential to support healing and lower the risk of infection.

Week Two: Slowly Becoming More Mobile

By the second week, many patients notice gradual improvements in comfort and mobility. Light movement around the home often becomes easier, and some people may be able to drive again once they are no longer taking strong pain medication.

Compression garments remain an important part of recovery and should continue to be worn exactly as advised. Swelling and bruising are still common at this stage and should not cause concern unless symptoms worsen unexpectedly.

Although you may feel more capable physically, the body is still healing internally and requires continued rest and patience.

Weeks Three and Four: Steady Improvement

This stage often brings noticeable progress. Swelling generally begins to reduce, and everyday movement feels less restrictive. Gentle walking is usually encouraged to promote healthy circulation and support recovery.

Even though the body may appear to be healing well externally, deeper tissues are still repairing beneath the surface. Heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and physically demanding tasks should still be avoided.

Attending follow-up appointments remains important during this phase so your surgical team can monitor healing and address any concerns promptly.

Weeks Five and Six: Returning to Everyday Activities

Around this point, many patients begin returning to desk-based work and light daily routines. Energy levels often improve considerably, and the results of the surgery become more visible as swelling continues to settle.

Scar management may also begin during this period, often involving silicone-based products or other treatments recommended by your nurse or surgeon.

Good nutrition and proper hydration continue to support the healing process. A balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals can help tissue repair and overall recovery.

Weeks Seven and Eight: Building Strength Gradually

By weeks seven and eight, light exercise is commonly reintroduced, although more demanding physical activity should only resume with approval from your surgeon.

It is important not to rush this stage. Returning to intense exercise too quickly can place unnecessary strain on healing tissues and may affect the final outcome. Gradually rebuilding strength and stamina is the safest and most effective approach.

Listening to your body remains essential throughout recovery. Taking things slowly often leads to better long-term results.

    Why Preparation Matters

Recovering from a 360 Lower Body Lift requires commitment, but thoughtful preparation can make the process far more manageable. Arranging practical help, taking adequate time away from work, and carefully following aftercare instructions all contribute to a smoother recovery experience.

Dr Andrew Broadhurst supports patients throughout each stage of the process, providing personalised guidance from the initial consultation through to long-term recovery. Knowing what lies ahead allows patients to approach surgery feeling informed, prepared, and confident about their healing journey.
