    High temperature composite joints are engineered for accommodating significant thermal expansion, contraction, and vibration in systems operating at temperatures often exceeding 750°F. These applications are typically carried out at extremely high temperatures. This necessitates the use of materials that can be used efficiently. High-temperature composite resins are considered the best choice for such situations.  Here are some of its key advantages

    • Heat Resistance:  These expansion joints are capable of operating under extreme operating temperatures that exceed 260 °C (500 °F). They are apporpriate choice for demanding applications such as heat shields/thermal barriers, supersonic structures and radomes. They must prove to withstand extreme heat and mechanical stress for maximum durability in a mission critical conditions. 
    • Flexibility: They are capable of working with high-temperature expansion joint systems for absorbing thermal movement and reducing stress. 
    • Low Maintenance: Engineered materials reduce wear and maintenance requirements over time.
    • Versatile Applications: These expansion joints are suitable for versatile industrial applications. They are compatible with elastomeric expansion joints and other industrial components used in power plants, chemical processing, and manufacturing systems. Polyamides, bismaleimides, cyanate esters, epoxy, and phenolic are some of the frequently used high-temperature composite resins. 

    Why are Standard Expansion Joints are not suitable for High-Temperature Applications?

    Standard expansion joints are typically manufactured using stainless steel alloys. Such material is prone to degradation when it is exposed to continuous high temperatures. In the same way, if rubber is used for extremely high temperatures, it may lose its elasticity and become brittle, leading to premature failure. High temperatures can also lead to other issues in expansion joints

    • Permanent deformation of the material due to sustained stress at high temperatures.
    • Chemical reaction leading to material degradation 
    • The thermal cycle is causing cracking and weakness  in the standard expansion joints

    There is a remarkable demand for expansion joints made using composite materials capable of withstanding extended exposure to harsh thermal and mechanical stresses. As there is constant development of resin chemistries as well as advancements in crosslinking capabilities, the manufacture of high-temperature composites has resulted in improved mechanical durability, flame resistance, and thermal insulation capabilities. Companies within the industry are increasing funds allocated towards research and development efforts to improve the processing properties of resin materials, and to create more compatibility with advanced manufacturing technologies such as resin transfer moulding (RTM), and automated fibre placement technology.
